The With-ness of God

18 December 2020

Somewhere in his book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, John Mark Comer talks about ‘…the with-ness of God…’. This idea speaks of a deep, fully-available-to-everyone truth that no matter who you are – your status, what your background is, what you have or haven’t done since 16 March this year (or any other year for that matter), there is a space available in time for us all to stop-at-will and recognise the richness and thickness of an eternal and unfathomable God.

I like the language of with-ness – it has an active, verb-like presence to it. This with-ness is still unfolding. Still being discovered. It speaks of the now and of the moment. It feels resistant to categories and boxes, impervious to the day-to-day challenges that come with each new sunrise or the epoch-changing nature of a global pandemic. It speaks of relationship above and below and within the noise that often seeks to drown it out. When Jesus said ‘…I have come that you might have life in all fullness…’, I believe he was speaking directly of this with-ness. Life as it was designed to be, rich, alive and eternally becoming.

It is as simple as turned attention…*

* Quoting, I think, Tiva Daka who captured the ease with which we can connect with the Source of it all.
