Not by falling
27 May 2020
‘…You drown not by falling into the river, but by staying submerged in it…’
(Ovi Mahajan / Extraction / Screenplay by Joe Russo.)
Pain is a natural result of any external or alien force on our physical, spiritual or emotional being. It is an alarm that lets us know something is wrong. The process of dealing with pain tends to start with addressing the cause – by stopping or removing it. Then we address the damage and finally the recovery – ideally preventing it from happening again. If we focus solely on the cause, often as a point of blame, we can sometimes never move on to addressing the damage or the recovery. Instead, we blame something (someone) which is ultimately out of our control. Boundaries are a safe way of ensuring things won’t happen again, and can protect us from a constant fear of being out of control. They help us focus on what we can do, and what is important – promoting recovery and healing.
We have to allow the river to carry us.
We must consciously choose to move from clinging to the bottom, frustrated and angry with the situation.
We need to let go of the reasons why.
To move with the natural flow.
Into a place where we can breathe again.
To journey.
